The 9th of May is the day when words of congratulations and condolences are heard, when tears of joy cannot be distinguished from tears of sadness, when cheerful songs replace the deep silence of a memorable minute of silence, when bouquets of lilacs are in the hands of grateful descendants – symbol of victorious spring, and scarlet carnations – a sign of eternal grief. Pridnestrovians celebrate the 78th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945. Festive events are held in all towns and districts of the republic. Solemn flower-laying ceremonies were held at the memorials and at the monuments to the defenders of the Fatherland.
The first persons of the state have gathered today at the capital's Memorial of Glory. A wreath, reminding that the memory of the great feat of the Soviet liberator soldier is inextinguishable, was lowered today to the Eternal Flame by the PMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky on behalf of the entire Pridnestrovian people. A scattering of fresh flowers was at the pedestals of monuments and on stone slabs on which the names of 1252 soldiers who gave their lives for peace and freedom were carved. Residents and guests of Tiraspol – many with portraits of heroic ancestors in their hands and with symbolic St. George ribbons on their chests – came to honor the memory of the defenders of the Motherland.
