Pridnestrovian State University is celebrating its 95th anniversary. The Order No. 1 was signed on October 1, 1930, defining the structure of the university – then still an Institute of Public Education: three faculties and five departments, with instruction offered in three languages: Russian, Moldovan, and Ukrainian. Later restructured and renamed the Pedagogical Institute it trained more than 30000 specialists over six decades. According to statistics, every fourth school teacher in Soviet Moldova was a graduate of the Tiraspol State Pedagogical Institute at the time. The establishment of Pridnestrovian State University on its foundation became one of the first legislative decisions of the young republic in the early 1990s.
Pridnestrovian State University named after Taras Shevchenko is today a classical multidisciplinary university with a three-tier system, including primary and secondary vocational education, higher education (bachelor's, specialist, and master's degrees), and dissertation councils. The university comprises three institutes, eight faculties, and one branch. Pridnestrovian State University is accredited by Rosobrnadzor in 54 areas of study. Over 8000 students are currently enrolled.
The university's infrastructure is constantly evolving to meet the demands of the times. It currently comprises two dozen academic buildings, six dormitories, a student clinic, a research and information library, approximately 50 modern resource centers and computer labs for collaboration with leading partner universities in Russia and the CIS, seven cultural and linguistic centers, four museums, an agrobiological station, the Saints Cyril and Methodius Cultural and Educational Center, the Record Sports Club, the Senetate Sports and Health Camp, the Sodruzhestvo Youth Sports and Health Complex, the IT-Quantum Multifunctional Digital Education Center, and a university chapel. Systematic and extensive work has been underway to renovate the university buildings—construction, renovation, and equipment since 2020, at the initiative and with the support of the PMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky.
The President personally congratulated the university staff on its anniversary today. The President took part in a ceremonial meeting held in the Great Hall of the Palace of the Republic.
Vadim Krasnoselsky spoke about the importance of the university not only for the effective functioning of the country's comprehensive educational system and the training of professional personnel for various sectors of the national economy, but also for the development and strengthening of statehood. The President expressed gratitude to the university's veterans. Vadim Krasnoselsky emphasized that the educational process continues to be conducted in the three official languages. He also highlighted the university's role in strengthening the Pridnestrovian people community, fostering a proper attitude toward history both within the republic and abroad, and promoting the fundamental principles of Pridnestrovian statehood. Vadim Krasnoselsky recalled as an example the inadmissibility of using the term "transnistria" in relation to Pridnestrovian, arguing his position.
"I am convinced that Pridnestrovian State University is the foundation of historical memory. This is perhaps the most important thing. Science, culture, education—all are necessary, but no one has a future without a clear memory – not the people, not the university, not the state," Vadim Krasnoselsky emphasized.
The most distinguished employees were awarded state awards and the honorary title of "Honored Worker of Public Education of the PMR" during the ceremony. The President of the PMR, founder of the state general educational institution Pridnestrovian State University Vadim Krasnoselsky was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of the university named after Taras for his contribution to the development of the university's research and educational activities, for assistance in organizing the interaction of Pridnestrovian State University with universities in other countries, and for his support and assistance in the education and spiritual and moral development of the younger generation Shevchenko by decision of the Academic Council.
